Interior Painting Prep Checklist Before the Crew Arrives
A homeowner-friendly checklist for interior painting prep, including furniture, wall condition, access, and what to decide before paint starts.
Painting goes more smoothly when the prep decisions are made before the first drop cloth comes out.
Clear the room as much as you can
Move small furniture, art, fragile items, and anything hanging on the walls. Large pieces can often stay if they can be shifted and protected, but less clutter makes the work cleaner and faster.
Decide on colors and sheen early
Waiting on a final color choice can delay the job more than homeowners expect. It also helps to choose sheen by room, since high-traffic areas and trim usually need something different than a bedroom wall.
Flag repairs before the job starts
Point out nail pops, cracks, dings, peeling spots, or water marks during the walkthrough. That makes it easier to scope the patching correctly instead of discovering it halfway through prep.
Plan for access and daily use
If the room is part of your normal routine, talk through that before work begins. Kitchens, hallways, bedrooms, and home offices sometimes need a sequence plan so the house stays usable.
Ask what prep is included
Good interior painting is not just rolling color on walls. Make sure the quote is clear about patching, caulk, sanding, masking, priming, and cleanup so you know what finish level to expect.
The smoother the prep conversation, the smoother the painting project usually goes.
