What to Ask Before Signing a Kitchen Remodel Quote
Key questions to clarify the work, timeline, and expectations before you commit.
Before you sign a kitchen remodel contract, a few questions can save headaches later. The goal isn’t to interrogate your contractor — it’s to make sure both sides are picturing the same job.
What the quote includes
- What’s included in the quote? (Demo, disposal, permits, inspections?)
- Are allowances listed for cabinets, countertops, fixtures — and are they realistic for what you picked out?
- What happens if we find unexpected issues (rot, wiring, plumbing)?
- Who is responsible for appliance disconnect and reconnect?
A quote that says “kitchen remodel — $X” with no breakdown is a red flag. You want line items you can compare and question.
Timeline and schedule
- What’s the expected start and end date?
- How do you handle delays (weather, material backorders, inspections)?
- Will we get updates if the schedule shifts?
- How many days will the kitchen be completely out of service, and is there a plan for a temporary setup?
Payment and changes
- What’s the payment schedule? (Deposit, milestones, final?)
- How are change orders handled? (Written, signed, added to contract?)
- What’s the process for punch-list items at the end?
- Is final payment tied to completion of the punch list?
Be cautious of large upfront payments. A schedule tied to milestones keeps everyone aligned.
The crew and your home
- Who will actually be in the house each day — employees, subs, or a mix?
- How is the work area contained? (Dust barriers, floor protection, cleanup expectations.)
- Where do materials and dumpsters go, and what hours does work happen?
Warranty and follow-up
- What’s covered after the job ends, and for how long?
- Who do you call if a cabinet door loosens or a caulk line fails three months later?
Reading an allowance correctly
Allowances deserve a special look. An allowance is a placeholder budget for items you haven’t selected yet — cabinets, counters, fixtures. If the allowance is lower than the products you actually want, the final price will climb past the quote. Ask what the allowance assumes, price out your real selections, and adjust before signing rather than after.
The one question that reveals the most
“Can I see a recent example of a written estimate you’ve given for a job like mine?” A contractor with a real process will have a real document. What you see there — detail level, assumptions, exclusions — is what you’ll be living with for the length of the project.
A clear quote answers most of these up front. We provide a written estimate with the job details, timeline, and payment terms before any work begins.

Kozub Remoldes LLC I highly recommend William Kozub. He spackled the sheet rock in a new bathroom and painted .He fixed 3 ceilings where drywall tape was separated and painted them. He was meticulous in his work and did a great job. He arrived on time each day and covered all the furniture and rugs before beginning work on a room. He covered each room with plastic and also the doorway so that dust didn’t escape. He cleaned up when he finished each room. He was concerned that I was satisfied and worked to make the job look great.
