When's the Best Time to Start a Remodel?
Seasonal considerations for kitchen and bathroom projects in the Raleigh area.
There’s no single “best” time — it depends on your schedule, your project, and how far ahead you plan. Here’s how the seasons tend to play out in the Raleigh area, plus what matters more than the calendar.
Spring and fall
Popular for remodels. Weather is mild, and many homeowners want projects done before holidays or summer. Schedules can fill up, so booking early helps.
If you want a spring start, the conversation should usually happen in winter. Design decisions, material selections, and lead times all happen before anyone picks up a tool.
Summer
Good for projects that involve open windows or ventilation — painting, finishing, some demo. Kids are out of school, which can simplify scheduling for some families.
Summer also works well when you’re traveling. Some homeowners prefer the crew to work while the family is away, especially for dusty phases like demo and drywall.
Winter
Often less busy. Lead times for cabinets and materials may be shorter. Indoor work isn’t weather-dependent. A solid time to start if you’re flexible on timing.
One caveat: holiday schedules can interrupt a December project, so a winter start usually works best right after the new year.
What matters more than season
Selections made early. Cabinets, tile, fixtures, and flooring chosen before the start date keep a project moving. Late decisions stall jobs in any season.
Material lead times. Some cabinets and specialty items take weeks to arrive regardless of the month. Ordering early beats picking the “perfect” start date.
Your own routine. A kitchen remodel during your busiest work season is harder than the same remodel during a quieter month — even if the weather is ideal.
The right scope. A well-planned project in a “busy” season usually finishes faster than a vague project in a slow one.
A practical way to plan
Work backward from when you want the room finished, then add buffer for selections and lead times:
- Pick a target finish window.
- Start the estimate and design conversation 1–2 months before that.
- Make material selections before the start date is locked.
